Dare to be Healthy
The Partnership for a Healthier Southwest Louisiana along with committed businesses, organizations, and individuals are partnering to carry out the mission of the Dare to be Healthy initiative—to fight the sky rocketing obesity rate and reshape Calcasieu Parish by delivering programs that support and embrace healthy living.
Dare to be Healthy is a three-year grant, 2013–2015, awarded to Calcasieu Parish from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation. The $760,000 grant is administered by Southwest Louisiana Area Health Center in cooperation with the Partnership for a Healthier Southwest Louisiana and community volunteers. Area businesses, civic organizations, Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, Calcasieu Parish School Board, City of Lake Charles, and others matched the grant dollars to increase scope of the initiative.
Dare to be Healthy initiatives will
- make environmental changes to facilitate physical activity
- provide school-based education and community outreach
- increase access to healthy foods
- provide community and clinical outreach to improve health outcomes
- advocate for governmental policy changes
