KNOW YOUR NUMBERS: Free Community Health Screening
Over 300 people turned out for the KNOW YOUR NUMBERS community health screening made possible by a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation Challenge ( a Healthier Louisiana supported grant program). Representatives from four local hospitals serving Southwest Louisiana, CHRISTUS St. Patrick, Lake Charles Memorial Health System, West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital and Women & Children’s Hospital, came together at the Lake Charles Civic Center, with a joint message — Know Your Numbers!
Usually these hospitals are competitors, working to serve residents and patients in a competitive market,” said Janice Ackley, Coordinator for the Dare to be Healthy program. “But they came together for this huge undertaking to encourage the community to Know Your Numbers and health risks and learn specific ways to improve those risks and your overall health.” The Partnership for a Healthier Southwest Louisiana, along with the City of Lake Charles were also major supporters.
The three big indicators and numbers you need to know are blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose. “They are the numbers that will tell you if you are at risk for heart disease, diabetes and other health problems,” said Louise McDaniel, workplace wellness coordinator for CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital. “These are problems nationwide, but Louisiana in particular has very high rates of obesity and related health issues. And knowing your numbers is what will help you take control of your own health.”
The KNOW YOUR NUMBERS event will be offered annually and includes the screening, health counselors, nutritionists and information on various health topics, as well as, access to information about Medicare and Medicaid. If you would like to know your numbers and were not able to attend the health screening, please do not wait for the next screening event. Consult your family physician soon. Look for notices for our next KNOW YOUR NUMBERS event in 2014.
